Rosenthal, ranked by MLB.com as the team’s seventh-best prospect, has been a member of Double-A Springfield’s rotation all season. The Cardinals do not project him to be a long-term reliever, but with a currently unsettled bullpen, St. Louis needs a boost.
The Cardinals optioned reliever Maikel Cleto to Triple-A Memphis in order to add Rosenthal to the 25-man roster. Lefty Jaime García, who is sidelined with a left shoulder impingement, has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Rosenthal on the 40-man roster.
