The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday fired a Texas staffer who appeared to offer to help someone figure out how to vote simultaneously in two states in undercover video released by conservative activist James O’Keefe.
Shot in September in the Houston office of Organizing for America, President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, the video appears to show regional field director Stephanie Caballero helping someone who claims to want to vote in both Florida and Texas. The video was posted online on Wednesday morning by O’Keefe, who is known for undercover stunts, the results of which are sometimes heavily edited.
DNC spokeswoman Melanie Roussell told TPM this video, however, was clear enough to fire the staffer.
“There is obviously a history here of making selective use of taped material, and we will certainly not vouch for the completeness of what was released,” Roussell said. “However, what we saw was enough for us to take the action that we did.”
Caballero did not respond to TPM’s request for comment.
O’Keefe has released a number of videos this year intended to demonstrate how easy it is to commit in-person voter fraud. One video showed an O’Keefe ally being offered Attorney General Eric Holder’s ballot at his D.C. polling place.
When TPM pointed out that voter ID laws wouldn’t have stopped the type of absentee ballot voter fraud that the undercover videographer claimed to want to pull off, O’Keefe said he has never endorsed any specific legislative solution.
